Colliding with non-fiction

So, this requires a backstory.

There's a website I'm a member of, on which you can post articles & photos & videos and such. People can comment, and while the majority of content isn't vastly literary in nature, occasionally you find the good writers. I stumbled across one-- a guy not too distant in age from myself. A good writer, who choses to share his little life-stories. Ultimately, his short 'articles' are blogs about his life, but well-written and witty enough to actually catch my eye repeatedly. And occasionally, they have pictures. So I started to keep up.

I knew the guy didn't live too far from my mom's, but over the border in NY-- unexplored territory, for the most part. And the area was a big one, so I never really thought much of it.

Fast forward to this afternoon. I was visiting the NY Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo with some friends of mine. We were wandering around, as is typical at Faire. There was a decent crowd, but nothing spectacular.

In any case, we were walking out of a booth, not going anywhere in particular, when a face caught my eye. Almost instantly, I thought, "She looks like that girl that guy on Gather writes about sometimes." I looked beyond her, to see a guy. I knew that the girl in question is often accompanied by a guy, but I didn't really have a photographic-visual to go on. However, there was a certain physical characteristic that had been mentioned in those stories.

They were accompanied by a third, another girl, and luckily enough, one of my friends knew her and detoured to talk to her. (Turns out, she was also written about by the guy-from-Gather.) I cautiously approached the other two, aware that, whether or not I was correct, this would likely be awkward. Upon nearing the pair, the man opened his mouth, displaying silver teeth. My assumptions had to be correct.

"Um, hi," I started. There was really no non-creepy way to go about this. "This may sound bizarre, but..."

I explained the situation. They seemed confused at first, but seemed to know who's writing I was referring to, even if I didn't name him. We made some small talk, my friend finished talking with the other girl, and we went our separate ways.

My mind was blown.

I knew these people existed, in some capacity, but I was distanced from the stories. I was simply reading them because I enjoy seeing snippets of other people's lives, and Guy-From-Gather wrote well and made his experiences interesting to observe from my little nook across the interweb. I wasn't expecting to actually ever have my life collide in any way with his.

I viewed these people as characters, basically. Maybe I knew they weren't fictional, but they weren't quite real to me, either. I knew little bits of information about them, and in a way, I almost felt as though I knew them, through what I'd read. Talking to them was so bizarre, because I don't really know them, even if I know things about them. And they know absolutely nothing about me.

To have the characters of another stranger's story suddenly show up in your life is unsettling, if sort of exciting.

It got me thinking. How many 'real' people just end up being characters to someone else? Am I a character, spoken of or written about, heard or read about by a stranger that finds me intriguing but never anticipates actually interacting with me? And how many characters have I 'created', out of real friends of mine, for other people to analyze from afar?

I'd like to think that if to some stranger, I'm a character, I'm at least an interesting one.

I was introduced to her friends who were with her, one of which was named "Xen" who seems to be the author of the blog

Wait, he was WITH them?! He wasn't there when I went to talk to the other two! ...wow.
I could have met him, too.

Wow, you've just described the way I think of my life, although it's not just the online personalities. A lot of times I'll think this or that character is leaving, or a new one is entering. And the online characters are sort of unreal, kind of a side story that doesn't really affect my life much, until I actually meet them in person. Though it's only happened twice that I've been able to put a face to someone I first knew as a screen name. I like the way you put it, and I know you're an interesting character.

ahh, and I get to screw blogboy on a regular basis! I'm practically a celebrity by association! Okay. Sorry. Insensitive. It's pretty neat to find people I know well being talked about by complete strangers on the internet, though =D

Cheers, you lot, and thanks for reading his blog. It makes him squee when he gets lots of hits.

...this is just a crazy, crazy circle of people that are slightly more connected than initially realized, apparently, hehe.

As long as I didn't scare anyone :D

Hi

And the scariest part is that I fully intend to write about this, though you didn't introduce yourself to me. I suppose that makes sense, since I tend to be the person behind the camera and thus there are fewer pictures of me in my entries than lithe blondes and metal toothed men (and impish brunettes who leave anonymous comments above about screwing me *Ahem*). I think you ran into the others when they were separated from Melanie and me.

I have a LiveJournal feed which is automatically updated but which I therefore cannot use to post comments, so I just created this profile. The feed is xenex_dot_org

Re: Hi

Aha! And yes, you met a friend of mine, apparently, but at the point where I stumbled across the situation, you were not around. Or I definitely would have been like, "oh hai, i stalk u thru gather." But probably less lolcat-ish.

Another oddly strange bit? I am fairly certain I stumbled across Daniel (or someone that looks rather like him) on OKCupid at some point in the past. Hooray for high match percentages?

And I'll be very much looking forward to reading about this! Exciting! Somehow, that makes my mind explode more, because I end up as a character, too...

Hooray for the interwebs!

Re: Hi

I am definitely okay with lolcat stalkers. I am on OkCupid too (which is why I am friends with Hannah, Daniel, and Jenn and why I am with Melanie). I guess I don't match as highly or you could have stalked me through there as well.

I am sick today, so I am going to be catching up on writing, which means I might actually manage to post about this before winter comes.

Re: Hi

Hmm, there's a chance I stumbled across you at some point in the past on OKC. You guys are, I think, at the very edge of the 100 mile radius I usually search within.

And bleh for being sick, but yay for catching up on writing! Feel better, and I hope it's been a productive day :)

Re: Hi

For some reason, I feel vaguely more comfortable responding here than to your actual post-- I apologize for any awkwardness I caused.
Next time, I suppose I should keep my mouth shut. Or filled with cheesecake, or something.

(And yes, I am Jenn's friend's friend, to confirm that. Zack being the mutual friend.)

Re: Hi

No, really, it is fine. I wish I had met you and I always feel a bit unreal myself when I realize someone is reading my story. Since Hannah is cool with being written about, I am fine with her amusement at having been approached. I just wish I could have met you instead, it would have made my week.

Re: Hi

Yeah... it figures that we just happened to stumble across the others when you weren't around! Though, I know Zack was talking to Jenn at one point prior to that and said he was introduced to you, and so I was probably somewhere nearby (but likely distracted by shiny objects or something).

You should let me know if you're going to any other Renaissance-ish things... I tend to show up at events like that. I rather enjoy breaking free of the time period without the hassle of plagues and such!
